Chapter 24
I t had been three weeks since Blessing showed me the picture of Benson and his new wife, and I still didnât know what to do with the information. Many times Iâd thought to confront him and Ebiakpo about it, but something told me to mind my business because I could already tell how my sister was going to react. Most importantly, I too had major personal issues of my own Iâd been struggling with in the last couple of days.
It had also been three weeks since Oputi walked into the workshop and into our lives. Three weeks was only twenty-one days, but it felt like twenty-one months. Her beauty captivated me, but it was even worse for Saka, Biodun and Broderick. Even Reverend Ebizimor who hardly ever crossed over to our side of the compound had in the last two weeks found reasons to pop in every now and then to ask irrelevant questions and make dubious enquiries. The last time he dropped by, he wanted to know if any of us had seen his Bible. The question I wanted to ask him was whether his Bible had legs, but I just smiled and said no .
Everyone was happy about the new addition to the workshop â everyone except Blessing. She didnât like Oputi, and when I asked her why, she said it was because of me. She said she didnât trust me around beautiful women.
Another person that didnât like Oputi was Sister Agnes. And it wasnât only because she didnât trust Saka. Her reasons were also pecuniary. The other day, she and Saka matched into my room during my lunch break and she said the most outrageous thing I had heard the months.
âOga Ebinimi, I want to manage your block.â
âMy block? Which block are you referring to? Do you like mean engine block or block of flats?â
âThe block when I dey talk about na the one when that new girl dey manage for una, wetin be her name sef?â
âOputi,â Saka interjected.
âWhether na Opu-T oh, abi na Opu-H, or Opu-M, dat one no concern me. Wetin I know be say she no go fit come from nowhere come take over our block.â I still didnât know what she was talking about, so I turned to Saka for help.
âOga Ebinimi, no be you talk this morning sey you want make she manage our social media block?â
I finally got it. âFirst of all, no be block; itâs called blog . Secondly, we donât even have a blog yet. It was just an idea I was discussing with her because I know sheâs good with all these social media stuff and also because of how well she has managed our Instagram page.â
âThat one come be wetin, no be just to dey post picture every day? Abi you never see my own Facebook page?â
âLook, Agnes, I donât know what your boyfriend has told you, but itâs more complicated than that. In the two weeks since Oputari started managing our page, she has grown it to almost seven thousand followers.
